Page 89 finally mentioned doing some script work, so I thought it would be a good point to go off and find some assets for my game to use. For snake, I’ll need:
- Snake sprite
- Background
- Score font
- Buttons
No need to go any more crazy than that. So lets see what Googling “Free game assets” gets me.
I’d heard of itch.io before so when it came up as a top result I wasn’t too surprised. After searching for snake I found this:
Snake Game Assets Pico-8 by Cosme (itch.io)

Perfect! Even comes with a background, food (which evidently I forgot) and different design sets for the snake. Right time to get to work. Turns out I was jumping the gun a bit and not quite ready for sprites. But its been the better part of a week and I’d like SOMETHING in my project to look at. I’ve used sprite sheets in the past so I knew what I had to do, just not how to do it. Cue checking out Unity’s docs who have a good post on it – Introduction to Sprite Editor and Sheets – Unity Learn. I didn’t understand it too well so went to check out a video instead on Youtube. 20 minutes later, I had my snake’s face on the screen thanks to (409) How to Import a 2D Character Sprite Sheet and Use in a GameObject in Unity (2021) – YouTube.
Next I managed to load up a script onto the snake’s face and now we’re really into it.

Best check back in on the book, don’t think it will be too smart to do too much and miss fundamentals. Getting to Page 109 it tells me to create a GameObject called Database.

Lovely. Now to create a folder for my Scripts – roger that.

Then generate a script called Database – may as well throw the Snake script in there too.

Then I need to “drag it onto the object in the Heirarchy”. Mkay let’s give that a go. I dragged and dropped it into the Inspector window, suppose that’s right?
It then goes on to talk about adding weapons and armour.. well I guess as a learning mechanic it can’t hurt.. who knows what may come of it.
